What is Ketosis?

Ketosis is a digestive or metabolic process that takes place inside the body when body doesn’t get the required glucose to make energy. In this condition, body breaks down the fats that are stored, resulting in development of acids known as ketones within the body.

The diet that is prescribed or taken or that aims to create the state of ketosis is called ketogenic diet. Ketosis diets are also referred to as ketogenic diets, ket diets, or sometimes low-carbohydrate diets.

Ketosis is often observed in diabetic patients as the insulin is not produced in their body in the required amount and therefore, body produces ketones which can burn fat to fuel the body cells.

A further cause of ketosis, less relevant to people with diabetes, is a result of excessive alcohol consumption.

Treating Epilepsy:

Many children with uncontrolled epilepsy enjoy improved seizure control through the ketogenic diet. By switching fuel to ketones, brain cells are better able to sustain the energy flow they need to function correctly and become more stable and less susceptible to seizure triggers.

The energy switch is also thought to influence the balance of neurotransmitters and a range of chemical compounds involved in exciting and inhibiting electrical activity within brain tissue. In addition to improvements in seizure frequency, intensity and the time needed to recover from seizures.

Those following the ketogenic diet may report more subjective changes such as being able to think more clearly, concentrate better, having more energy and feeling generally brighter in mood.

Other Benefits:

According to the Mayo Clinic, the ketogenic diet could have a healthful effect on serious health conditions such as cardiovasc ular disease, diabetes and metabolic syndrome. It may also improve levels of HDL cholesterol better than other moderate-carbohydrate diets.
